Cross: Consumer Safety Tips on Recent Utility Scam

DECEMBER 12, 2012 Attorney General, ICC warn utility customers of reported Chicago-area scam PLAINFIELD – State Representative Tom Cross (R-Oswego) shared a warning today from Attorney General Lisa Madigan and the Illinois Commerce Commission (ICC) alerting residents of the Chicago area to a recent scam in which individuals claiming to be a utility company employee ask for immediate payment of a bill either at a customer’s door, over the telephone, or via e-mail. The ICC has received complaints from utility customers about scam artists claiming to be utility representatives, telling customers their service will be disconnected unless payment is made directly to the scammers. “I applaud the Attorney General and the Illinois Commerce Commission for calling attention to this scam and providing consumers with helpful tips and resources to protect themselves,” said Cross. “Use common sense, always ask for identification, and report any suspicious incidents to your local police and the Attorney General’s Consumer Fraud Bureau.” The Attorney General and the ICC offer these reminders to utility customers: • Never provide personal information to anyone who comes to the door or calls you claiming to be a representative of the utility. • Contact the utility at the phone number listed on your bill to confirm the caller or the representative at your home is a verifiable employee of the utility. Do not call a different number suggested by the potential scammer. • Utility field personnel do not take payments from consumers. Be on guard with anyone who asks for your personal information or says you must pay immediately and suggests a method to get the money quickly. If you suspect you have been scammed, wish to report a suspicious incident or have questions, please contact the Attorney General’s Office at 1-800-386-5438 or the ICC at 1-800-524-0795.

Statement on Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day

DECEMBER 7, 2012 Today we remember the courageous American servicemen who lost their lives in the attack on Pearl Harbor on this day in 1941. More than 2,400 Americans were killed, including 50 servicemen from Illinois. They were among “the greatest generation” of whom so much has been written over the years. Today, on the 71st anniversary of the tragedy which sparked America’s entrance into World War II, we honor the memory of those who gave their lives as well as those who survived and went on to serve with bravery and distinction during the war that followed. Please join me today in thanking all our veterans for their service to our country as we remember those who died at Pearl Harbor.  Sate Representative Tom Cross

Cross Statement on House Recognition of local U.S. Paralympic athlete Joe Berenyi

DECEMBER 4, 2012 SPRINGFIELD, IL – State Representative Tom Cross (R-Oswego) released the following statement on the adoption of House Resolution 1220 today honoring U.S. Paralympic gold medalist and Aurora native Joseph Berenyi, currently a resident of Oswego. [caption id="attachment_2960" align="alignright" width="300"] Leader Tom Cross and Gov. Pat Quinn welcome Joe Berenyi to the State Capitol with his wife, Jill, and their three daughters.[/caption] “It is an honor to pay tribute to an extraordinary husband, father, athlete and citizen; Mr. Joe Berenyi. Joe has dealt with adversity for much of his adult life, never letting the physical or emotional toll of his life-altering injuries sustained in a construction accident 18 years ago hold him back from living an active, complete life. Joe’s record-setting gold medal performance in cycling at this summer’s Paralympic games is an inspiration to many and a proud moment for this remarkable native son of Illinois.” The Illinois House of Representatives unanimously adopted HR 1220 to congratulate Berenyi on his many accomplishments and medals won in competition at the 2012 Paralympics in London. Berenyi won a gold, silver and bronze medal in separate cycling events; setting a world record in individual pursuit cycling. He resides in Oswego with his wife, Jill, and their three daughters.

Veto Session Gets Underway This Week

NOVEMBER 27, 2012 The Illinois General Assembly has returned to Springfield for the first week of our Fall Veto Session, the time when we meet to vote on whether to accept or override vetoes issued by the Governor since the adjournment of our spring session on May 31. This year, there are only seven substantive bills that were vetoed by the Governor. Veto Session is scheduled over two weeks; November 27-29 and December 4-6. The Speaker of the House has also scheduled a lame-duck session for the first week of January, when fewer votes will be needed to pass some of the more contentious items remaining on the agenda. Check back here for continued updates throughout Veto Session and the lame-duck session in January leading up to the inauguration of the new 98th General Assembly on January 9, 2013.

Thanksgiving Greeting from Rep. Tom Cross

NOVEMBER 22, 2012 Dear Friends:

As we gather with family and friends to celebrate this Thanksgiving, let us take a moment to recognize the everyday heroes who give us so much to be thankful for; our mothers and fathers, brothers and sisters, local first responders in our police and fire departments; and the soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines who call our state home as they proudly serve us in peace and conflict abroad.

Despite the many challenges that face us as a state and nation, we have much to be thankful for this holiday. As your State Representative, I am especially grateful for the opportunity to serve you in the Illinois General Assembly and the privilege of being your voice in Springfield. Together we will continue to make progress toward improving the quality of life and opportunity for all our families.

From my family to yours, may each of you have a safe and blessed Thanksgiving holiday.

Sincerely, State Representative Tom Cross
