Leader Cross' Statement on Lack of Bond Sale

JANUARY 30, 2013 "The administration's decision to pull the $500 million bond sale today is a clear indication that officials were concerned that we might pay too much in interest, in large part due to our awful credit rating. Our failure to pass meaningful pension reform, to pay down our large backlog of bills and to live within our means is contributing to this uncertainty in the markets for us. We stand ready to address these issues today--so that we are not forced to pay unnecessarily high interest rates." -Rep. Tom Cross Illinois House Republican Leader

Leader Cross' statement on S&P's downgrade

JANUARY 25, 2013 “S&P’s downgrade of our bond rating – coming on the heels of Fitch’s announcement just two weeks ago – is another indication of the gravity of Illinois’ fiscal crisis. We simply cannot afford continued downgrades at a time when we urgently need to restore stability and balance to the state’s fiscal climate. The General Assembly must act in order to avoid further damage to our credit rating by achieving consensus on meaningful pension reform that can pass the House and Senate this spring.” - Rep. Tom Cross IL House Republican Leader

ReBoot IL: Cross: Reason for optimism on pension reform

January 24, 2013
While advocates for public pension reform endured a setback during the January lame duck session of the General Assembly, critical progress has been made toward a bipartisan agreement that would restore Illinois’ pension systems to firm financial footing while maintaining a secure retirement for our state’s dedicated teachers and state employees. Key to this progress was the House Personnel and Pensions Committee approving a plan that we worked on with Democrat Representatives Elaine Nekritz of Northbrook and Representative (now Senator) Daniel Biss of Evanston. The legislation, SB 1673, ultimately did not get called for a vote prior to our adjournment – but represents an encouraging step in the right direction. Click here to read the entire article.

Leader Cross’ statement on Fitch’s downgrade

JANUARY 11, 2013 “Fitch’s downgrade of our bond rating is embarrassing and may cost the state more money—money that we clearly do not have. How many more times do we have to be downgraded to prompt action in the General Assembly? I have worked and will continue to work with other members in the House and Senate to pass meaningful pension reform.” - Rep. Tom Cross IL House Republican Leader
